Steelhead
Fall & Winter Steelhead - October, November & December:
We like to start targeting Fall Steelhead at the tail end of October with November and December being the prime time when Steelhead are on fire ! With exciting jumps and drag burning runs. Fall is an excellent time to fish the river with most of the heavy traffic from salmon season over and cool crisp mornings make it a wonderful time of year. Resident Trout fishing is also very good at this time of the year.Trout feed voraciously on salmon eggs from the spawning coho and King salmon at this time of the year. While nymping egg patterns usually takes most of the fish swinging flies for these fresh run fish can also be very productive.
Spring Steelhead - March, April & May:
March, April, and May are the best times of the year to fish for Great Lakes Steelhead. Michigan Rivers start to see another push ot fish in March and Early April. Because of their larger size, the Muskegon River and Big Manistee River fish much later in April and May. The Steelhead migration lasts much longer on these two river because they are dam controlled that feed cold water into these two rivers. Spring Steelhead are the crown jewel of the Great Lakes. Rivers such as the Muskegon, Manistee, Pere Marquette, and Grand offer some outstanding steelhead fishing in West Michigan.
